What kind of animals have we become?

The mother of Kyle Rittenhouse, the 17 year-old charged with fatally shooting two people in Kenosha, Wisconsin, during protests following the police shooting of Jacob Blake, received a standing ovation on Thursday while attending a Wisconsin GOP event.

GOP Senate candidate Lauren Witzke on Thursday defended the right-wing PROUD BOYS group on Twitter, arguing that the male-only organization exemplifies “patriotic masculinity.”

These two news stories from the MSN feed should have all of us asking, “What has happened to us?”

Calling the Proud Boys (they are on SPLC’s hate group list) examples of ‘patriotic masculinity’ and extending a standing ovation to the mother who drove her son in full costume with weapons to Kenosha to kill two protesters are not my idea of patriotism. Forgive me for being old-fashioned, but what ever happened to Kate Smith singing “God Bless America” and marching in the Veteran’s Day Parade in downtown Nowhere, USA with waving flags and high school bands or watching fireworks over the Capitol on July 4th?

Are we this desperate for bona fide heroes?

Every day in this country we see examples in the news of people who seem to be without values, lacking integrity, and we ask ourselves, “What is wrong with the people of this country???” Today, Larry asks that question in response to two truly jaw-dropping events in the past week. Are we becoming a nation of fools who have no values whatsoever? Thank you, Larry, for expressing what I think the majority of people are thinking … SIGH.

  2. Here courtesy of Jill’s reblog. Tell me this is not true. Celebrating shooting people is not something to aspire to. Even people who have had to do so protect someone – law enforcement, soldiers – have concerns about their actions. The old line that you lose a bit of your soul when you take a life is believable. To applaud it being done, reveals a lack of decency and empathy.

As for endorsing (not just not condemning) a white supremacist group, that is a bridge too far. These hate groups have been around for awhile, but now they feel empowered by the president. They feel they can walk among folks advertising their hateful beliefs without repercussions. We cannot stand for hate. We must admonish those who use violence regardless of cause, even when people who are attached to a cause you support.

To have such celebrated at a Republican rally, unfortunately, speaks volumes and leaders must condemn it, even if the president will not. While I am sorry the president, first lady and several others are COVID-19 positive and wish them well, we cannot lose sight of what was said and not said at the debate about a white supremacist group. 3. These people have dipped deeply into the gene pool of their Barbaric ancestors for their moral fiber. If this is the definition of masculinity I shall be on my knees tonight thanking the Goddess Mother that I am NOT a male. Abhorrent, degrading, disgusting, pitiful, impotent display of patriotism. Of course I think the very idea of ‘patriotism’ promotes division of humans. And that mother, she deserves to be put in prison.
